1873-The first Marshall County Fair Opens

Last Updated 7/17/2025

Today kicks off the 2025 Marshall County Fair with the horse show and horse speed events. For the next several days we will dig into the history of the Marshall County Fair.

The fair was first organized by the Marshall County Agricultural Society. It was held on September 23rd, 24th and 25th 1873 in Marysville. According to the Marshall County News the location was ½ mile northwest of the city.

Classes included: items from a garden (including tobacco), Pigs, Crochet, clothing, buggy, cows, horses, best harness made, fastest racing horse, best pair of working mules, best made furniture, and trotting/racing horses.

On the 2nd day: Over 1,000 people attended the event from all over Marshall County. At 2pm, the horse races started, and the fair was packed with people. "Marshall County News, September 23, 1873, page 3"

The fair remained in Marysville until 1916 when it moved to Blue Rapid. More on that tomorrow.
