The Marshall County Historical Society was founded in April of 1971 by 18 interested persons. The group gathered at various places around the county to build awareness and membership. Dues were only $1. At the end of 1971, the society had 277 members and growing! In March of 1972, plans were being made to have the Pony Express Barn be the society's headquarters. During the 1970's, the Society was researching historic places and buildings to be on the National Register. On November 5th, 1974, the Marshall County Courthouse was added to this list. The courthouse was deeded to the Marshall County Historical Society in December 1979. Work began on preserving the interior with a Heritage Grant. In 1980, the Marshall County Historical Society had a new home in the Historic Courthouse that was built in 1891.
